Financial Times Ranks McDonough MBA 19th in the United States

The Financial Times lists Georgetown’s Full-time MBA program as 19th in the United States and 44th in the world in its 2016 Global MBA Ranking.

Hundreds Gather for Inaugural Africa Business Conference
More than 300 students and business leaders came together at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business on Saturday, Feb. 6 for “Africa Rising: Business in Action." The day-long conference, sponsored by Georgetown McDonough and the Walsh School of Foreign Service African Studies Program, showcased the growth and impact of the private sector across the African continent and facilitated a discussion on opportunities to continue this success.

Georgetown students had the opportunity to learn about life in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and to meet with nearly two dozen startups and high growth companies at the first Startup Career Fair, held on Feb. 5 in Shea Commons. The fair, sponsored by the Georgetown Entrepreneurship Initiative, was open to both graduate and undergraduate students.

Alumni Gather in San Francisco
On January 28, 2016, Georgetown McDonough hosted its first alumni reception of the year at the JW Marriott Union Square in San Francisco. Nearly 100 university-wide alumni, current students, and prospective students joined Georgetown McDonough representatives for an evening of conversation and networking with Doug Knopper (MBA '85), co-founder and co-CEO of FreeWheel Media, and Johnno Wilson (C '07), an actor and stand up comedian.

Nonmarket Strategy Certificate Program Welcomes Inaugural Cohort
Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business has invited 43 MBA students to the inaugural cohort of the Certificate in Nonmarket Strategy.

“Georgetown McDonough enjoys a defining and differentiating characteristic by virtue of its location in Washington, D.C., which provides unparalleled access to national and global institutions that set the rules by which businesses must operate,” said Dean David A. Thomas. “Our MBAs who participate in the Certificate in Nonmarket Strategy will have an opportunity to use our city as their classroom and learn from professors across disciplines who are world-renowned in their fields.”

Global Leadership Competitiveness (GCL) Program Starts Tenth Year
On January 11, Georgetown McDonough Executive Education, in partnership with Georgetown University’s Latin American Board, welcomed leaders from the Ibero-American region for the Global Leadership Competitiveness Program (GCL), now in its tenth year. The 2016 cohort includes 35 participants representing 19 countries. They hit the ground running with daily classes – in such topics as leadership and personal development, global strategy development, politics of inequality, and personal branding – as well as numerous site visits and lectures from thought leaders, taking advantage of all that Washington, D.C., has to offer. The next several weeks of GCL will bring visits to the U.S. State Department, Gallup, and the National Endowment for Democracy, to name a few. GCL participants also will take a pause in their rigorous curriculum to give back by volunteering at Cornerstone School. MBA Students Travel to California For Annual CalTrek Event
Every January, MBA students have the opportunity to escape chilly East Coast temperatures and travel west to California. This year, 35 Full-time and Evening Program MBA students participated in the 2016 MBA CalTrek trip to the Golden State, meeting with companies and recruiters established on the West Coast, as well as networking with local Georgetown University alumni.

Sponsored by Georgetown’s MBA California Business Alliance, CalTrek is a student group that facilitates and organizes the annual trip to the San Francisco Bay and Silicon Valley areas. This year, students visited Adobe, Andreessen Horowitz, Chegg, FreeWheel, Google, HP, JP Morgan, and Kaiser Permanente, among other companies.

Research Finds Diversity Challenges in Hiring NFL Head Coaches
White assistant coaches are twice as likely to be promoted to a coordinator position than minority coaches, according to new research led by Chris Rider, assistant professor of strategy at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business.

The Rooney Rule, established in 2003, requires NFL owners to interview a minority candidate when hiring a new head coach. No hiring requirement is imposed, but the expectation is that diversifying the interview list will lead to more diversity among head coaches. However, analyses of NFL career data of more than 1,200 coaches from 1985 to 2012 suggest that little has changed for minority assistant coaches.

2016 Post-Holiday Spending Hangover Better Than in 2015
This year’s post-holiday hangover in consumer spending should be shorter than in 2015, according to the Georgetown Institute for Consumer Research. The institute’s Problem-Driven Consumption Index (PDCI) – based on the idea that consumers’ problems predict their purchases – suggests that spending in January and February will be substantially stronger than the same time last year.
