Letter From Managing Director Ricardo Ernst

Four continents, six countries, and 40 projects marked the culmination of the travel portion of the Global Business Experience (GBE) for our full-time MBA students. During the first week of March we reported live from the six cities (Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Johannesburg, Dubai, and Barcelona) through our Twitter account, with information on our students’ client presentations, company visits, community projects visits, and city tours. Both our students and the client companies were very pleased with the results of this year’s GBE and it has served to strengthen our relationship with the client companies to return next year with the class of 2016 and new challenging global consulting projects.

The Global Business Initiative External Advisory Committee met in March. The committee meeting coincided with the Georgetown McDonough Board of Directors spring leadership meeting, during which President John J. DeGioia stressed the importance of embracing the university's global potential.

Stay tuned for our next edition which will feature our evening students’ GBE, including two new city destinations, information about our next Global Summit and more exciting GBI news.

Financial Services Consulting in Mumbai

“The streets of Mumbai, India, were packed with people, cars, animals, and bicycles, all in constant motion. Their constant honking echoed through the city at all hours. Yet, where some might see chaos, I saw organization and patterns,” said Eric Ellsworth, a full-time MBA student at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.

Ellsworth’s group consulted with Home First Finance Corporation of India, a small mortgage lender which serves lower-income residents. The four students worked on the project for months prior to the trip. “They asked us about technology, what tech could do to help them compete better,” Ellsworth said. “We looked at things that might benefit them in a competitive sense, like mobile finance or digital advertising.”

The Brazilian students taught their Georgetown peers how to play the drums and dance. Afterward, Flavio Pimenta, the founder and director of Meninos do Morumbi, spoke to the MBA students about the impact that the program has had on the 14,000 students who have participated. Georgetown students were able to talk with Brazilian students about their experiences in Meninos and compliment them on their exceptional musical skills.

Georgetown McDonough Identifies 12 Cities for Global-Ready Leaders

As Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business aspires to become known as the premier destination for global business education, the school’s Global Business Initiative (GBI) External Advisory Committee has identified 12 cities around the world for the school to focus its international engagement over the next several years: Dubai; Hong Kong; Istanbul; Johannesburg; London; Madrid; Mexico City; Mumbai; São Paulo; Seoul; Shanghai; and Singapore.

The GBI board members identified these cities by looking at many different variables, including the number of alumni and prospective students in residence, the locations of the school’s Global Business Experience consulting projects, and the organizations that hire business graduates and offer executive education programs to employees through Georgetown McDonough.

David A. Thomas, dean and William R. Berkley Chair, has been visiting many of these cities as part of his “Business Has No Borders” tour, during which he is meeting with alumni and business leaders to talk about the future of global business and what business schools can do to develop executives to conduct business on a global stage.
