Lady Barbara Judge, chair of the U.K. Pension Protection Fund, will serve as chair of the Business, Society, and Public Policy Initiative’s Advisory Board. “I am absolutely thrilled that Lady Barbara Judge has agreed to head up the initiative,” said James P. Moore, Jr., managing director of the initiative. “She has had one of the most extraordinary careers on both sides of the Atlantic, and is a dynamic figure on the world stage addressing issues that are having an impact on business, government, and society in some profound ways. The Business, Society, and Public Policy Initiative will hold the first Rafik Hariri Symposium on Thursday, April 9

The Business, Society, and Public Policy Initiative will hold the first Rafik Hariri Symposium on Thursday, April 9, at 4 p.m. at Georgetown McDonough’s Hariri Building. Members of the initiative’s Advisory Board will discuss “Conducting Business in an Unsafe World: ISIL, Cybersecurity, and Militarism.” Both the symposium and the building honor Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik B. Hariri, who was assassinated a decade ago. Saad Hariri (B’92) made a gift in his father’s memory to name the building and to support the McDonough School of Business.

His Excellency Jose Manuel Barroso, former president of the European Commission and past prime minister of Portugal, has been named to the initiative’s Advisory Board. "It is a great honor and delight for us to have President Jose Barroso join our board," said James P. Moore, Jr., managing director of the initiative. "His steady leadership in critical and tumultuous times has secured his place in history, both during his time as the president of the European Commission and before that as prime minister of Portugal. His extraordinary background as well as his gifted talents and insights will provide the board and Georgetown McDonough with an important voice. Not only will he help us prepare future business leaders for the world of today, but he will help Georgetown McDonough elevate the dialogue for the general public in the intersection of business, government, and society."

New Partnership with Bipartisan Policy Center

The McDonough School of Business is a co-sponsor of the McCourt School Policy Conference 2015: Infrastructure as a Path to Development, to be held Friday, March 20 at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

McDonough School of Business Dean David A. Thomas and Bipartisan Policy Center President and CEO Jason Grumet are set to launch a new relationship between the school and the center. Founded in 2007 by former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, Bob Dole, and George Mitchell, the Bipartisan Policy Center is a non-profit organization that drives principled solutions through rigorous analysis, reasoned negotiation, and respectful dialogue. The partnership will allow the school and center to work together on several fronts, including on an effort to determine how the federal government can adopt certain business practices to operate more efficiently and effectively.

Initiative's Advisory Board Meeting on April 9 and 10

The Advisory Board of the Business, Society, and Public Policy Initiative will have its first meeting on April 9 and 10. The two-day meeting will launch with the Hariri Symposium on Thursday afternoon and will continue on Friday with discussions about the progress and aspirations of the initiative.

Business students are involved in the Business, Society, and Public Policy Initiative.

Undergraduate, graduate, and executive education students at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business are an integral part of the Business, Society, and Public Policy Initiative. Most importantly, students are helping to assess the school’s course offerings at the intersection of business, government, and society, especially in comparison to other business schools around the world. Students also are involved in the initiative through conferences and other programs.

Professors Catherine Tinsley and Robin Dillon-Merrill have long collaborated with one another in probing the roots of a critical aspect of business, government, and society in today’s world. Namely, they have been searching for answers to understand how and why people make decisions they do under conditions of uncertainty and risk. From terrorist attacks to earthquakes, their research and analysis have been uncovering critical insights for leaders in all areas. Their work, which has been adapted for teaching in the classroom and has been widely disseminated to businesses, governments, and non-profit organizations around the world, will be highlighted during the initiative’s Advisory Board meeting on April 10.

McDonough Co-Sponsors Infrastructure Conference

Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business served as the official co-sponsor of the 21st McCourt School Policy Conference, held at the Center for Strategic International Studies on March 20. This year’s conference centered on “Infrastructure as a Path to Development,” with special emphasis on transportation, telecommunications, and energy. More than 250 people gathered at the event, which featured an opening keynote with Anthony Williams, former Washington, D.C., mayor and member of the Business, Society, and Public Policy Initiative’s Advisory Board; panel sessions with experts; and a closing keynote with the former President of Mexico Felipe Calderon.
